Description

Through this project CRITFC was able to organize a successful tribal Salmon Camp with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) July 5th – 9th, 2011 at the Hancock Field Station in Fossil, OR for 19 tribal youth ages 9 – 12 years old. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects, along with Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) , were incorporated in all of the Camp Sessions. Staff then conducted four follow-up Salmon Camp Evaluation meetings with Camp participants and parents at each of the four tribe’s reservations on the effectiveness of the lessons learned at Salmon Camp and provided information on continuing STEM learning in high school and college.

Project Benefit

Benefits to Target Salmon Species: The outreach efforts will support natural spawning populations of numerous species of fish including but not limited to spring Chinook, fall Chinook, bull trout, summer steelhead, and lamprey. These species of fish among other aquatic organisms will benefit indirectly as the education and outreach program seeks to educate Native American students, from elementary school through professional careers.
