Description

This project funded the following habitat protection and restoration work:
Granite Creek Recovery and TMDL Implementation
Granite Creek is an impaired waterbody from turbidity and suspended sediment resulting from local roads, run-off pollution from recent watershed development, and gravel mining operations. Plans for recovery were approved in September 2002 and ACWA funds have been supporting the city’s effort in restoring Granite Creek. This project focused on several activities designed to continue improving the water quality of Granite Creek and the North and South tributaries. The project addressed riparian buffer protection and revegetation and conducted water quality and fish counts to determine the effectiveness of the actions and overall health of the creek for attainment of water quality standards and removal of the impairment status.
One Mile Creek Watershed Protection and Education
This project conducted stream gauging to establish an instream flow reservation with ADF&G’s Sport Fish Division. Takshanuk Watershed Council was awarded the funding to collect discharge measurements using USGS protocols to capture the flow characteristics at the range of flows during all seasons, download gauge data, and provide it to the ADF&G to be used for an instream flow reservation. ADF&G has filed an instream flow reservation with this and previous data.
Sawmill Creek Watershed Protection and Education
This project conducted stream gauging to establish an instream flow reservation with ADF&G’s Sport Fish Division. Takshanuk Watershed Council was awarded the funding to collect discharge measurements using USGS protocols to capture the flow characteristics at the range of flows during all seasons, download gauge data, and provide it to the ADF&G to be used for an instream flow reservation. ADF&G has filed an instream flow reservation with this and previous data.

Project Benefit

Salmon production is dependent on healthy habitat and sufficient water of high quality. ACWA-funded projects improve or protect salmon habitat, water quality and quantity, and watershed health. This project will benefit salmon resources and users by protecting or improving salmon habitat and water quality in waterbodies that are deemed high priorities.
