Description

The field portion of this project was completed in November 2006. Review of DIDSON files continued through December 2006 and January 2007 by CTWS and CRITFC staff. After the review was completed, the data was analyzed and interpreted. See the summary, Using a Dual Frequency Identification Sonar (DIDSON) to Enumerate the Spawning Migration of Kokanee Salmon into the Metolius River. for details (this summary accompanied the final report).

Project Benefit

The targeted species of salmon are kokanee/sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka). This project will aid in the enumeration of the spawning migration of kokanee salmon, and will be used in conjunction with other kokanee studies in Lake Billy Chinook (by Portland General Electric and ODFW) to determine the number of age 1+ Lake Billy Chinook kokanee available for sockeye reintroduction efforts, while still allowing for maintenance of a harvestable population of adult kokanee. This information is important for the implementation of the Upper Deschutes Reintroduction Plan (ODFW & Tribes 2006), which outlines goals for the reestablishment of anadromous fish passage into the middle Deschutes River Basin above the Pelton Round Butte Hydroelectric Project.

          Description of monitoring
The data generated by this project will be used to construct population estimates of the spawning migration of kokanee salmon into the Metolius River. These estimates will be compared with estimates using other methods (conducted by PGE and ODFW). More accurate estimates of the population structure of Lake Billy Chinook kokanee salmon will be used in future management efforts, both in terms of harvest and the future re-establishment of anadromous sockeye salmon runs in to the Deschutes Basin.
