Description

Conduct probabilistic monitoring (includes water quality, habitat, macroinvertebrates and fish) in the Willamette basin at 52 randomly selected stream and river sites in 2006. Produce a draft report based upon probabilistic sampling data (2003-2004) for the Lower Columbia River ESU that evaluates the relationship between stressors (e.g., temperature, sediment) and biological integrity as determined by an analysis of the community structure of macroinvertebrates and fish.

Project Benefit

This project will provide water quality and biomonitoring data that will be essential for salmon recovery planning, limiting factor analysis and for evaluating the effectiveness of programs to improve the health of rivers and streams in the Willamette basin. We will be able to describe the extent of impairment from selected stressors and the risk of that impairment to the biological community or health of the streams and rivers. Willamette basin including the following ESUs: Lower Columbia River Chinook, Upper Willamette River Chinook, Lower Columbia River Coho, Lower Columbia River Steelhead and Upper River Steelhead.

          Description of monitoring
Draft will be written 1.5 years after field work ends. Report is scheduled for September 2008. Actual: No final reports have are available at this time. Some samples are still being analyzed and not all data are available. We anticipate a draft monitoring results report to be ready by spring 2008 with a final report done by spring 2009. The report will describe the biological, water quality and habitat quality of Willamette basin streams and rivers using survey data from a probabilistic poll of stream segments. The extent of impaired stream miles for key indicators will be identified based on state water quality criteria or reference condition benchmarks.
