Description

Project supported Quileute Tribal technical and policy staff involved in salmon harvest management and recovery planning. Harvest management includes cooperative pre-season planning with WDFW, participation in PFMC and PST forums, and in-season fisheries implementation. Envir. Policy analyst worked with Lead Entity Group and watershed council to identify priorities for salmon habitat restoration and develop strategies for recovery of depleted salmon populations.

Project Benefit

Project provided essential technical and policy capabilities to the Quileute Tribe to ensure that salmon harvest is scientifically sound and optimized to provide economic and cultural benefits to the tribal community. The project also enabled tribal staff to participate in conservation and recovery planning with state and federal agencies, and local NGOs. Pacific fisheries meetings lead to (a) programmatically improved modles used for harvest management in the larger planning arena (Pacific coastal salmon) and (b) appropriate annual harvest quotas. Regional Lead Entity meetings on salmon restoration lead to an improved strategy document (regularly updated) targeting priority restoration needs in the Quileutes treaty area watersheds (and others).
