Description

This project supported two return years of terminal area Chinook composition monitroing. The project supported two seperate monitoring programs. The Tribe conducted spawner surveys for fall chinook in tributaries of the Skagit River collecting information needed to generate escapement estimates. Additional scale and CWT data was collected during these surveys to refine hatchery stray rates, RER for indicator stocks, and age information to analysis RERs and to generate future forecast estimates. The Tribe also conducted test fisheries in the Skagit River to generate stock timing, composition and abundance estimates, and collected age, hatchery, and life history strategy (otoliths) information. Part of the support from this project began the devlopment of an access database to manage the data collected in these ongoing projects.

Project Benefit

Skagit salmon data composition will provide inseason and postseason run size and escapement confidence. The data collected on salmon species will also provide long term assessments of size, hatchery vs. wild ratios, age compostion, and esturary research. The chinook spawning surveys will add insight to available habitat, usage, escapement and salmon forecasting.

          Description of monitoring
Skagit River test fisheries and chinook spawning escapement monitoring intent is to control impacts on listed Chinook populations in order to avoid impeding stock rebuilding.
