Description

Funding was used to conduct various spawning and creel surveys to determine salmonid stock numbers within Reservation stream systems and the fishing pressure they receive in order us to better determine status and trend of fish populations and thus how to respond. Information collected from this effort will be used to determine fishing seasons (limits) as part of the Tribes developing Wildlife Ordinance Code to better protect, preserve and manage its fishery resource. Data may also provide direction in determining whether a Tribally run Fish Hatchery will be warranted in the future. The Project lasted longer than expected due to the limited windows of opportunity (i.e. a combination of water level and clarity) to allow the conducting of stream surveys.

Project Benefit

This Project gave us some very good information on the numbers of fish that are returning to streams within the Reservation, the amount of fishing pressure they receive and the definite downward trend that is being observed. This data will be used in the Tribes Wildlife Management Plan that will be drafted in the future with proposed US Fish & Wildlife Service funding.
