Description

There was a slight deviation to this project because the costs for the Cabin Creek culvert were higher than anticipated and consequently limited work possible at the Indian Grave Creek worksite: One culvert was upgraded at the Cabin Creek worksite making an additional 1.5 miles of habitat available to steelhead and bull trout. One culvert was upgraded at the Indian Grave culvert increasing available habitat by 1.2 miles. One culvert upgrade with a larger culvert and one culvert upgrade to a bridge in the Savage Creek worksite increased habitat availability by 3.2 miles, which was an increase from the proposed 2.5 miles of habitat.

Project Benefit

Steelhead trout, bull trout, westlope cutthroat trout are present within Indian Grave, Cabin and Savage creeks. Spring Chinook salmon are present downstream in larger tributaries (Lochsa River, Colt Killed Creek). Installation of larger culverts or bridges will allow access to 7.5 additional miles of aquatic habitat for steelhead trout and reduce the risk of culvert failure and potential sediment input into steelhead trout spawning and rearing areas.

Some substrate and physical monitoring occured immediatley after installation. Monitored the new installation to see that the installation met construction requirements and achieved the goals of stream simulation. Fish passage will be evaluated in August of 2007. Parameters included will be channel slope in and outside the cultert, percent substrate colonization in the culvert, and substrate size inside and outside the culvert, Redd counts and photo points.

For every culvert replaced on the Clearwater National Forest they evaluate the new installation to see whether installation meets construction requirements and achieves the goals of stream simulation. Some substrate and physical monitoring occurs immediately after installation. Fish passage is evaluated in the first summer after installation. The parameters monitored include, channel slope in and outside the culvert, percent substrate colonization in the culvert and substrate size inside and outside the culvert, Redd counts and photo points. Monitoring will be completed on the Indian Graves worksite in 2008.
