Description

The Soda Creek Fish Passage and Winter Habitat Refugia Design Project produced final (100%) engineered designs to restore anadromous fish access to 2.6 miles of habitat by replacing a culvert that is a partial barrier to Coho Salmon and Steelhead Trout near the mouth of Soda Creek (tributary to the North Fork Navarro River). The project included the development of final designs for instream habitat enhancement along approximately 500-feet of existing winter refugia habitat (Phase I, Crossing Replacement Reach), and development of site characteristics a conceptual non-engineered enhancement plan for an additional 4,200-feet of habitat in Lower Soda Creek (Phase II, Lower Soda Creek Planning Reach), and completion of CEQA-related botanical and cultural resource surveys of the project area to prepare for future construction activities.

All FY18 PCSRF funds were spent within the award period.

Project Benefit

The project goal is to produce final engineered designs for the Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC) Soda Creek stream crossing that, when implemented, will restore fish access to approximately 2.6 miles of upstream habitat. The project will also develop final designs for instream enhancement activities along approximately 500 feet of existing winter refugia habitat (Phase 1, Crossing Replacement Reach), will develop a conceptual instream enhancement plan for an additional 4,200 feet of habitat in Lower Soda Creek (Phase 2, Lower Soda Creek Planning Reach), and will complete CEQA-related surveys of the project area to prepare for future construction activities.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
This project will addressed recovery task NaR-CCC-6.1.1.1 by producing 100% final designs to replace the Soda Creek culvert crossing and to enhance habitat upstream. The project completed designs that will lead to implementation of a replacement structure that will improve passage to approximately 2.6 miles of upstream habitat. The designs also resulted in preliminary site characterizations and development of conceptual designs to restore approximately 4,200 feet of existing stream habitat upstream of the crossing site.
