Description

A total of eight bank habitat structures (ELJ) were constructed throughout the lower reach. The original design called for seven ELJs, however Grantee (TNC) and subcontractor (PCI) proposed construction of an additional bank habitat ELJ in order to make use of additional logs and rootwads that were left over after construction of the other project structures and increase habitat. TNC and PCI worked with the CDFW grant manager, as well as the permitting agencies, and received approval for the additional bank habitat ELJ, which was constructed near the upstream end of the lower floodplain. FY18 funds were spent within the award window.

Project Benefit

The project will provide critical missing habitat elements that are needed to maximize juvenile salmonid survival and growth in the resource-rich middle estuary zone. Over 34,000 square feet of in-channel complex log features, spatially distributed along the length of the ½ mile-long middle estuary, will be built. Two floodplain wetland inlets and three seasonally-flooded shallow ponds will be graded and revegetated to provide over 2+ acres of off-channel rearing habitat.
