Description

Validated use of restored habitats by juvenile coho salmon, tidewater goby, other fish, and amphibian species upon completion of the Martin Slough Enhancement Project. Fish monitoring was conducted throughout the project area in two field seasons, fall 2021-spring 2022 and fall 2022-spring 2023. Monitoring objectives included determining the timing, rearing duration, movement patterns, growth rates, survival of overwintering juvenile coho salmon in off-channel habitats, and timing and duration of coho smolt out-migration. The project area included approximately1.5 miles of restored channels plus off channel ponds. Growth rates (weight and length), movement patterns, and outmigration dates were described in annual project reports. In addition to fish monitoring, water quality monitoring occurred simultaneously with each fish sampling session that included temperature, dissolved oxygen, and salinity measured between the surface and bottom at 1-foot depth intervals.

FY18 funds were spent within the award window.

Project Benefit

Support research necessary to understand crucial aspects and uncertainties regarding coho salmon biology (such as biological refugia and non-natal rearing areas); Provide information to better understand essential aspects of coho salmon life-history strategies (such as relative abundance, estuary use, overwintering growth and survival); Understand biological response to the enhancement project; Inform future habitat enhancement projects; Provide essential data for guiding adaptive management
