The South Coast Regions Southern California Steelhead Restoration and Recovery (SCSRR) project will monitor southern steelhead within the Santa Monica Mountain Biogeographic Population Group (SMM BPG) following methodologies outlined in Fish Bulletin 180 and 182. To meet recommended targets of estimation for steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Santa Monica Mountains, monitoring efforts will include operation of a Life Cycle Monitoring (LCM) on Topanga Creek in addition to summer low flow electrofishing surveys and winter redd surveys on GRTS selected sample frame reaches. Operation of the Topanga Creek LCM station will continue the longest running southern steelhead sampling program (2000 to present) and is comprised of a DIDSON sonar camera, and Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tag antenna, Redd, snorkel, and electrofishing surveys.
Project Benefit
The NMFS Recovery Plan requires a set population level be reached in each of the five Biogeographic Population Groups (BPG) within the Southern Steelhead Distinct Population Segment in order to de-list the species. The only way to determine what the current steelhead population status is and whether recovery efforts are working is though the establishment of a large-scale monitoring program. Without a long-term monitoring program, delisting by NMFS will not be possible. Accomplishments
