Description
Freshwater Creek: Abundance estimates are made for multiple life history stages, at multiple spatial scales for Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon, and steelhead trout. Several methods were used to characterize abundance including: 2023-24 Adult escapement: weir-carcass mark-recapture experiment, 2023-24 Spawning ground surveys, and 2024 Juvenile emigration trapping mark-recapture experiment. Survival estimates were made using the following mark-recapture experiments: 2022 Smolt to Adult Return (SAR) survival and 2024 Coho Salmon pre-spring and spring migrant probability estimates. Mill Creek: The second project estimates salmonid redd abundances in Mill Creek, Smith River Del Norte County. The monitoring elements in this project will continue baseline data to meet the needs of viability assessment and recovery criteria defined by CDFW and NOAA Fisheries. Abundance estimates are made for redd counts for Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon, and steelhead trout.
Project Benefit
Goal: Serve the primary goals of adult abundance and Life Cycle Monitoring for the California Monitoring Program. Measurable Project Objectives: Provide reliable estimates of annual adult Chinook and Coho Salmon, and steelhead returns in both Freshwater and Mill Creeks and juvenile smolt abundances, and estimates of freshwater and marine survival rates of Coho Salmon in Freshwater Creek LCM. Federal and state listings of these salmonids require monitoring to provide measures of recovery. Information provided by this monitoring effort is critical for maintaining continuity of long-term datasets to inform recovery efforts.
