This Agreement is providing funding for three CMP projects in the Eel River Watershed:
1. The South Fork (SF) Eel River Adult Salmonid Abundance Monitoring Project;
2. Spatial Structure Survey in the Lower Eel-Van Duzen River; and
3. The California Coastal Chinook Salmon Monitoring Project in the Main Stem Lower Eel River.
Projects 1 and 3 share the goal of monitoring adult salmonid populations in the Eel River; however, they differ in location and how the monitoring will be conducted. Project 2 will provide data on the distribution of salmonids in the Lower Eel ? Van Duzen River and will only be contingent on sufficient funding remaining after completion of projects 1 and 3. This agreement will discuss these projects collectively where appropriate and differentiate them when necessary.
Project Benefit
The SF Eel River CMP project will monitor adult Coho Salmon abundance in the South Fork Eel River and is needed to evaluate both trends in population abundance as well as the population response to recovery projects implemented to treat limiting factors.
Spatial structure surveys are necessary to provide information on the expansion or contraction of Coho Salmon distribution in Lower Eel and Van Duzen River recovery unit. Spatial structure is an essential component of population viability and provides invaluable data to advise restoration activities and assess population recovery.
The Main Stem Lower Eel River CMP project will monitor adult and jack Chinook Salmon abundance in the mainstem Eel River and is also needed to address both trends in population abundance as well as the population response to ocean management strategies. Accomplishments
