Description    


This study is a continuation and expansion of the long-term monitoring initiated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) in 2013 to ascertain the abundance and spatial structure of southern California steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) within the Monte Arido Highlands and Conception Coast Biogeographic Population Groups (BPGs) as outlined in CA Fish Bulletin 182. In FY 22/23, monitoring in the Monte Arido Highlands included operation of a life cycle monitoring station (LCM) within the Ventura River watershed along with operation of two fixed counting stations (DIDSON/ARIS sonars camera) in the Santa Ynez River watershed. Conception Coast monitoring composed of a LCM station on Carpinteria Creek along with redd surveys conducted on selected generalized random tessellation stratified (GRTS) sample reaches. The Gaviota Creek site was not able to be utilized due to a changing agreement with a partnering agency.

Project Benefit    


This project will collect abundace data at a large scale and contribute to determining the current steelhead population status in the Conception Coast BPG. Without a long-term monitoring program, delisting by NMFS will not be possible. Adding new methodologies from Fish Bulletin 182 will also increase the knowledge of spatial structure and abundance by including other survey methods.
