Description
During the 2022-23 monitoring season, a DIDSON camera was placed at RM 0.9 on the Big Sur River from 11/30/2022 through 06/01/2023 to determine adult steelhead abundance and migration timing. In addition to the DIDSON camera survey, staff determined the juvenile density and distribution of the O. mykiss (anadromous and resident) population by conducting low flow surveys on approximately 20 Short 100-meter study reaches within the Big Sur Coast Biogeographical Population Group using Low-Flow technique described in Fish Bulletin 182.
Project Benefit
Steelhead populations along the Big Sur Coast, Carmel Watershed and Interior Coast range are part of the federally threatened South-Central California Distinct Population Segment. National Marine Fisheries Service states that obtaining adult steelhead population data for these systems is a crucial component of adopting appropriate management strategies (NMFS 2013).
