Description
The purpose of this project is to continue the long-term monitoring of Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, and steelhead trout populations in two watersheds in coastal Northern California.
Freshwater Creek:
Abundance estimates are made for multiple life history stages, at multiple spatial scales for Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon, and steelhead trout. Several methods were used to characterize abundance including:
2022-23 Adult escapement: weir-carcass mark-recapture experiment
2022-23 Spawning ground surveys
2023 Juvenile emigration trapping mark-recapture experiment
Survival estimates were made using the following mark-recapture experiments:
2021 Smolt to Adult Return (SAR) survival
2023 Coho Salmon pre-spring and spring migrant probability estimates
Mill Creek:
The second project estimates salmonid redd abundances in Mill Creek, Smith River Del Norte County. Abundance estimates are made for redd counts for Coho Salmon, Chinook Salmon, and steelhead trout.
Project Benefit
Freshwater Creek and Mill Creek will be represented in coastal Coho Salmon stock assessments of the region. This project will collect data for the adult abundance and juvenile components of the LCM to continue these time series in Freshwater Creek and allow for assessment of coastal Coho Salmon trends in escapement and productivity over nearly 180 km of California coast north from the Eel River to the Oregon border. The Mill Creek component will provide important data on adult abundances in an area that supports multiple salmonid species.
