Description

This study is a continuation of monitoring efforts initiated by the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains in 2001 to ascertain the abundance and spatial structure of southern California steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) via operation of a life cycle monitoring station along Topanga Creek. Topanga Creek is designated a high priority (core 1) watershed for steelhead recovery by the National Marine Fisheries Service. A DIDSON sonar camera was utilized to provided unbiased counts of anadromous adult O. mykiss. PIT tag deployment via electrofishing capture and installation of a PIT Tag detection antenna was utilized to produce O. mykiss smoltification and marine survival estimates. Spawning ground surveys were conducted to document O. mykiss reproduction actions and determine O. mykiss life stage, abundance, and spatial structure.

Project Benefit

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) issued a recovery plan for Southern California steelhead in 2012. The Recovery Plan requires a set population level be reached in each of the five Biogeographic Population Groups (BPG) within the Southern Steelhead Distinct Population Segment in order to de-list the species. The only way to determine what the current steelhead population status is and whether recovery efforts are working is though the establishment of a large-scale monitoring program.
