Description    


This study is a continuation of long-term monitoring initiated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission in 2013 to ascertain the abundance and spatial structure of southern California steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) via operation of a life cycle monitoring station within the Ventura River watershed, which the National Marine Fisheries Service has designated as a core 1 high priority for steelhead recovery. Deployment of a DIDSON camera provides potential unbiased counts of any anadromous adult O. mykiss that return to the watershed. Electrofishing capture of O. mykiss for the deployment of PIT Tags and construction of detection arrays allows for smoltification rate and marine survival estimates. Snorkel surveys provide O. mykiss habitat, spatial structure, and abundance data. Spawning ground (redd) surveys allow for additional estimates of O. mykiss abundance, spatial structure, and reproduction attempts.

Project Benefit    


The only way to do determine what the current steelhead population status is and whether recovery efforts are working is though the establishment of a large-scale monitoring program. Without a long-term monitoring program, delisting by NMFS will not be possible.
