Description

FLIR has been demonstrated as a reliable, cost-effective, and accessible technology for monitoring and evaluating stream temperatures from the scale of watersheds to individual habitats. Stream temperatures in the Hoh River and South Fork (SF) Hoh River (on the West slope of the Olympic Peninsula, WA) were last mapped in the year 2001. With this funding, the tribe will obtain updated FLIR information in August 2023. This funding will contribute to approximately half of the Wild Salmon Centers cost to fly the FLIR flight in the Hoh River Subbasin. Deliverables include geospatial data collected during the flight and a final report. Results from the 2001 flight were compared to those collected in 2023.

Project Benefit

FLIR will enable the Hoh Tribe to evaluate current climate change impacts and to better identify project areas to target for restoration. The Hoh Watershed encompasses an area of approximately 167,000 acres and includes the Hoh River, South Fork of the Hoh Rives, and approximately 28 tributaries. FLIR flights are typically completed during low flow conditions, approximately August-September.
