Description

Seven creeks (Tish Tang, Campbell, Supply, Mill, Soctish, and Hostler creeks) on the Hoopa Valley Reservation have been monitored for salmonid spawning activity since the Hoopa Valley Reservations Fisheries Departments inception. Data from these annual redd surveys are incorporated in basin wide estimations of run sizes. Additionally, the extended time series data offers valuable information on the past and current trends on returning adult salmon in the lower Trinity Basin. This project would monitor the seven creeks in fall and winter for chinook and Coho spawning activity, and visit those same creeks again in the spring to monitor for Steelhead spawning activity. This project is highly weather dependent; during those times when inclement weather prohibits effective sampling, technicians will be tasked with entering historic data that is currently held in analog.

Project Benefit

Project Objective: (I) To estimate the number of adult salmonids returning to seven creeks on the Hoopa Valley Reservation and (II) digitize past redd survey data from those same creeks to allow for future historical analysis.Project Benefits: SONCC in the lower Trinity River are identified in the Recovery Plan as being at high risk of extinction. Restoration of tributary habitat for both natal and non-natal SONCC is therefore of great importance. This project facilitates the evaluation of spawning success of anadromous salmonids within Reservation streams, providing managers with necessary data to prioritize potential restoration sites and evaluate restoration success.

Priority Two – Restoration effectiveness monitoring at the watershed scale for Southern Oregon Northern California Coho and other fish species important to the exercise of federally-recognized tribal fishing rights (SONCC Recovery Actions Addressed: SONCC-LTR.27.1.22.1 Describe annual variation in migration timing, age structure, habitat occupied, and behavior; SONCC-LTR.27.1.45.1 Conduct presence/absence surveys for juveniles).
