Description

This project monitored trends in populations of North Umpqua salmonids, specifically spring chinook, coho, and summer and winter steelhead. Other species monitored included pacific lamprey, small mouth bass, and small populations of fall chinook and chum. Data and information from this monitoring effort was used both locally and statewide in annual reports, management and restoration decisions, publications, and for other purposes.

PCSRF FFY 2019 funds were expended on project costs incurred during the PCSRF FFY 2019 contract award period and PCSRF FFY 2020 funds were used to complete the project.

Project Benefit

The goal of this project was to estimate the run size of a variety of salmonid and other fish species, determine run-timing, evaluate long-term population trends, and to monitor river temperature. Data collected was available to fisheries managers throughout the state and can be used to predict run size in other basins.

          Description of monitoring
This project enumerated adult/jack salmonids and other species from video recorded in the Winchester Dam fish ladder as they passed upstream on the North Umpqua River. Adults/jacks were counted by species and fin clip by reviewing non-uniform stratified samples from tapes recorded 24/7/365.
