Description

This project monitored status and trend of salmonid habitat and juvenile rearing in the Oregon Coastal SMU and Rogue(SONCC)/KMP SMU(ESU)/DPS. Status and trend information was determined from the results of habitat and juvenile surveys, and compared with data collected in previous years. Survey effort was based on an integrated random site selection process. Results included measures of stream habitat characteristics and rearing capacity for juvenile coho and species composition and density of juvenile salmonids. Results were calculated at three nested spatial scales; the whole SMU/ESU, component strata, and/or each population. Results were reported on ODFW web pages, in ODFW annual and other reports, and included in analyses and reports of other state and federal agencies.

PCSRF FFY 2019 funds were expended on project costs incurred during the PCSRF FFY 2019 contract award period and PCSRF FFY 2020 funds will be used to complete the project.

Project Benefit

This project implemented a component of ODFW’s Oregon Plan Monitoring Program by providing data on the status and trends in anadromous fish populations and their habitats. Information and analysis provided by the stream habitat project were essential to the management and recovery of salmonid populations. The data were critical for evaluating population status and will be used directly to target restoration priorities and actions. The Oregon Plan Monitoring Program continued a long term commitment to status and trend monitoring of adult and juvenile fish abundance and distribution and stream habitat and riparian conditions. The monitoring data provided information relevant to abundance, productivity, survival, distribution, and viability of salmon and steelhead in support of conservation and recovery planning and implementation in Oregon Coast populations.

          Description of monitoring
Stream habitat and juvenile fish surveys were conducted in wadeable streams. Sites were randomly selected and surveyed in the summer. These surveys provided data on the status and trends in anadromous fish populations and their habitats.
