Description

The Nestucca, Neskowin, and Sand Lake Watersheds Councils (NNSLWC) Expanded Monitoring project is filling a data gap on bacteria loads and stream temperatures in key locations in the Nestucca, Neskowin, and Sand Lake watersheds. This project is designed to expand the spatial network of monitoring sites utilized by Tillamook Estuaries Partnership, and has acquired two years of summer stream temperature data in the Nestucca and Sand Lake watersheds, and nearly one year’s worth of biweekly data on Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria levels in the all the watersheds. As this project progresses through the next Expanded Monitoring II grant and hopefully a following one, it will allow for a statistical trend analysis which will be used to inform prioritization and planning of restoration projects in these watersheds.

Project Benefit

The NNSL seeks to collect and analyze high quality temperature data for the purpose of prioritizing restoration activities that will improve habitat and water quality for salmonids. By understanding the status of key tributaries to the Nestucca, Neskowin and Sand Lake basins, the NNSL can ensure it is prioritizing and implementing projects in the stream reaches of its watershed where temperatures are impaired or close to meeting the DEQ water quality temperature standard as well as identify areas of cold water refugia to enhance or protect.
