Description

This project installed a 50 ft. x 50 ft. paddock and installed an additional 60ft. x 50 ft. turnout adjacent to an existing horse barn. The heavy use paddock area was treated with a hoof-grid system and surfaced with rock to reduce erosion and improve drainage. The paddock was fenced and grass was left around the paddock to create a buffer zone to reduce sediment, nutrients and bacteria from entering the creek through a French drain system during winter storm events.

Project Benefit

The primary goal for this project is to reduce non-point source pollution into Hackard Creek which feeds directly into the salmon-bearing Lewis and Clark River. By decreasing inputs generated on small agriculture operations such as sediment, nutrients, and bacteria into Hackard Creek, water quality of the Lewis and Clark River will improve.
