The South Fork Eel River (SFER) Adult Salmonid Abundance Monitoring Project addressed components of the long-term monitoring and assessment plans for Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) populations outlined in CDFG Fish Bulletin 180, CDFG Recovery Strategy for California Coho Salmon and NMFS Final Recovery Plan for the SONCC ESU of Coho Salmon. The main objective of the project is to estimate the total number of Coho Salmon redds constructed in the South Fork Eel River during the spawning season. Additional data on Chinook Salmon and steelhead redd counts are also collected and used for estimation, though the survey design does not completely capture all of these species? spawnable habitats.
Project Benefit
The SF Eel River CMP project will monitor adult Coho Salmon abundance in the South Fork Eel River and is needed to evaluate both trends in population abundance as well as the population response to recovery projects implemented to treat limiting factors.
The Main Stem Eel River CMP project is needed to address the lack of monitoring data and a comprehensive monitoring plan for California Coastal (CC) Chinook Salmon. The lack of monitoring data has made it difficult to establish population status and trend and slowed the development of fishery assessment and recovery. The project will provide an Eel River CC Chinook escapement estimate to the Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC), and this escapement will be directly used to evaluate ocean Chinook Salmon recreational fishery harvest management.
