Description

The Palouse Conservation District (PCD) will implement instream restoration work in Steptoe Creek, located in Whitman County, WA. PCD will increase fish habitat complexity by improving instream wood and pool habitat for juvenile and adult wild steelhead by installing approximately 40 Post Assisted Logs Structures (PALS) in a 0.3 mile reach located about 8 miles up Steptoe Canyon Road. PALS provide instream structure without damaging the existing riparian habitat and leave a small disturbance footprint. The completed restoration project will improve spawning habitat in the system while also increasing the impact of previous and on-going efforts to increase steelhead populations in Steptoe Creek.

Project Benefit

The goals for this project are to restore stream processes by improving pool and woody debris to increase habitat complexity for Snake River steelhead in Steptoe Creek. By increasing habitat complexity through the placement of Post-Assisted Log Structures (PALS) both adult and juvenile steelhead will benefit from our actions by increasing both suitable resting and rearing pools and woody material in the active stream channel during all freshwater lifestages.
