Description

This project integrated recovery efforts for endangered Southern California steelhead in focal watersheds to restore steelhead, conserve their ecological resilience, and protect watershed beneficial uses. This accomplished by submitting 12 grant proposals to fund high priority projects and implementing six projects; holding quarterly Coalition meetings; participated in seven regional environmental groups, developed a GIS based FishPass Framework, prioritized refugia locations for relocation, ground truthed 10 refugia sites, created 5 brochures and fact sheets, created 46 social media posts/interviews/videos/publications, presented at 2 conferences, and performed public outreach at sixteen events, and 8 volunteer field outings.

Project Benefit

This project builds on the demonstrated project coordination, implementation and outreach capabilities of the South Coast Steelhead Coalition to implement the federal steelhead recovery plan and promote steelhead recovery. This integrated effort - by over 35 organizations - to develop and implement priority restoration projects and engage the public through multiple channels ? has built a project portfolio > $20 million and a full calendar of public events in San Diego and Orange Counties.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
The South Coast Steelhead Coalition focused on four high priority watersheds for steelhead recovery Core 1 populations designated in the NMFS Southern Steelhead Recovery Plan (2012): San Luis Rey River, Santa Margarita River, San Mateo Creek and San Juan/Trabuco Creek. Coalition projects addressed the main threats to steelhead recovery listed in the Plan including the removal fish passage barriers, removal of non-native species, improving water quality and water quantity, and preserving native rainbow trout populations. The Coalition mobilized watershed groups to participate in endangered steelhead recovery by providing a systematic Strategic and Implementation Plan (2014) and public outreach capabilities. This inlcuded Coalition meetings and grant writing ability to support prioritized projects.
