Description
During the 2020-2021 monitoring season, a DIDSON cameras was placed at RM 5.2 on the Ventura River from 01/26/2021 through 05/13/2021 to determine adult steelhead migration timing and abundance. A Passive Integrated Tag (PIT) array was deployed in conjunction with the DIDSON from 01/26/2021 through 05/13/2021 along the Ventura River and a second array on San Antonio Creek, a major spawning tributary, was operated from 12/29/2020 through 05/13/2021 to estimate steelhead marine survival and productivity.
In addition, redd surveys were conducted in the Ventura River watershed from RM 0.3 covering a total of 36 RM to the end of anadromy on all mainstem and tributary reaches from 12/23/2020 through 5/27/2021 to determine adult steelhead spawn timing, spatial structure, and to compare detection rates with the DIDSON and PIT Tag monitoring stations.
Project Benefit
The only way to do determine what the current steelhead population status is and whether recovery efforts are working is though the establishment of a large-scale monitoring program. Without a long-term monitoring program, delisting by NMFS will not be possible. Accomplishments
