Description

Monitoring included (1) regional spawning surveys and (2) life cycle monitoring in coastal Mendocino County (Figure 1). We conducted spawning ground surveys from November through May. Access agreements were established with landowners, and reaches were scouted in October and November 2020 before surveys began. We performed life cycle monitoring at Pudding Creek, South Fork Noyo River, and North Fork Navarro River to estimate adult and smolt abundance and freshwater and marine phase measures of productivity, and to calibrate regional spawning ground redd abundance estimates. Spawning surveys and daily operation of the fixed station adult fish traps (Pudding and South Fork Noyo) began in November 2020 and continued through May 2021. Smolt trapping and PIT tagging was conducted on Pudding Creek, South Fork Noyo River, and North Fork Navarro River from March 2021 through mid-June 2021. Maintenance and data retrieval from PIT tag arrays occurred from November 2020 through June 2021.

Project Benefit

Federal and state listings of these salmonids require monitoring to provide measures of recovery. Information provided by this monitoring effort is critical for maintaining continuity of long-term datasets to inform recovery efforts.
