Description

SFER Adult Salmonid Redd Abundance Monitoring Project conducted 273 spawning ground surveys over 30 reaches (18 of which were spatially balanced and randomly selected) from December 4th, 2020 to March 12, 2021. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) in partnership with Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC), Trout Unlimited (TU), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operated a Dual-frequency IDentification SONar (DIDSON) camera to enumerate adult and jack salmon escapement into the lower mainstem Eel River above the confluence with the South Fork Eel River during the fall and winter of 2020-2021.

Project Benefit

The SF Eel River CMP project will monitor adult Coho Salmon abundance in the South Fork Eel River and is needed to evaluate both trends in population abundance as well as the population response to recovery projects implemented to treat limiting factors.

The Main Stem Eel River CMP project is needed to address the lack of monitoring data and a comprehensive monitoring plan for California Coastal (CC) Chinook Salmon. The lack of monitoring data has made it difficult to establish population status and trend and slowed the development of fishery assessment and recovery. The project will provide an Eel River CC Chinook escapement estimate to the Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC), and this escapement will be directly used to evaluate ocean Chinook Salmon recreational fishery harvest management.
