Description

This project developed the engineering and design documentation needed for a fish-friendly culvert replacement on a tributary of Old Tyonek Creek in West Cook Inlet. It generated a hydrology and hydraulics (H&H) report and completed the 100% design construction plans for the culvert replacement, set for construction in 2025. The design adhered to the FWS Culvert Design Guidelines for Ecological Function, ensuring ecological integrity and the longevity of the investment. Replacing the undersized culvert (Alaska Department of Fish and Game culvert #20601535) will restore habitat connectivity for 1.4 km of stream and 1.4 ha of wetland, benefiting the coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) population vital to the Tyonek Subdistricts subsistence setnet fishery in Cook Inlet.

Project Benefit

This project will provide design and engineering plans for a culvert replacement that will make accessible the full extent of salmon habitat along an Old Tyonek Creek tributary, reconnecting 1.4 km of stream and 1.4 ha of wetlands. A fish-friendly culvert will restore self-sustaining natural ecosystem function and processes along this creek tributary and wetland area and ensure that the connectivity between both sides of the road is maintained so anadromous fishes are able to easily move through habitat as needed for their growth and survival.
