Description
The Tribe has recently been successful in acquiring and restoring multiple parcels along the Dungeness riparian corridor. These acquisitions have included restoration activities such as dike setbacks, constructed log jams, structure removal, and revegetation, and have had the compounding benefit of reach-scale floodplain connectivity. The Tribe intends to continue riparian/floodplain purchases, and depending on progress made on related due diligence, this project would contribute to staff time necessary for land purchase/easement due diligence and/or associated riparian or in-stream restoration efforts on Tribal parcels of interest. If parcels or easements are already in progress by the time we access this award funding, this funding will assist with Tribal staff participation in implementation of related in-stream or riparian habitat restoration on the property. This could include contributing to reforestation of existing riparian stream reaches owned by the Tribe or its partners within the Dungeness watershed or other streams within our U&A.
Note: Metrics for Riparian Habitat Project have been filled in as a placeholder for riparian treatment, but this will depend on what stage of restoration the parcel will be in at time of spending. Its possible that in-stream treatments may be occurring at time of spending, in which case metrics will be updated.
Project Benefit
The Tribe’s goal for its habitat program is to continue purchasing riparian parcels, especially parcels adjacent to current projects, to contribute to reach-scale riparian habitat restoration for ESA-threatened salmon within our Usual and Accustomed Areas. Purchasing and restoring riparian areas provide the best opportunity for the Tribe to prevent structures that reduce floodplain habitat from being built. These efforts also provide opportunities for increasing habitat within the floodplain, such as by restoring and reconnecting potential side-channel habitat/refugia for salmonids.
