Description

By placing wood in this portion of Forks Creek we expect to improve the ability of the stream to react to the increase in sediment transport subsequent to the weir removal. Habitat forming processes that we expect to be engaged include sediment sorting, gravel cleaning, flow partitioning, side-channel enhancement, riffle development and pool formation. We expect these processes and the presence of wood to increase habitat complexity and diversity and improve productivity.

Project Benefit

1) Improve habitat conditions in the Upper and Middle sub-reaches of Lower Forks Creek for rearing Coho and steelhead juveniles.

2) Install 25 large key piece wood structures downstream of the WDFW water siphon intake weir before its removal in the late summer of 2022 to capture and sort the expected pulse of sediment currently stored upstream of the weir.
