Description

During the grant period, August 2019 through December 2022, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) conducted intensive modeling and monitoring of the recreational Chinook and Coho salmon fisheries in the Marine Areas of Puget Sound (5-13) and the Washington Coast (Marine Areas 1-13), as required by NOAA. Pre-season modelling was conducted each spring, in-season monitoring was conducted, and fisheries estimates produced as outlined in the List of Agree Fisheries between the State of Washington and the Northwest Treaty Tribes. Federal requirements to document the impacts on Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed salmon stocks were also met in order to implement these fisheries. WDFW conducted specialized sampling programs in each Marine Area and evaluated several data parameters using methods including dockside angler interviews (creel surveys), on-the-water boat surveys, the collection of voluntary Salmon Trip Reports from the angling public, and test fishing of recreational fisheries, depending on the Marine Area. The objective of this project was to evaluate and model the critical data parameters needed to assess the impacts of prosecuting these fisheries in Puget Sound and on the Washington Coast. The information collected allowed fishery biologists and managers to determine how many salmon were encountered (both kept and released), the adipose fin-clip (mark) rates by species, species composition of all encounters, unmarked retention error, legal and sub-legal sized encounter rates on Chinook salmon, total mortalities on encountered salmon and total mortalities by marked and unmarked coded-wire tag groups in these fisheries. Modeling and monitoring of this type required the additional resources from this grant to complete the data collection and analysis of these fisheries.
