Description

The project completed conceptual and preliminary designs (including basis of design report, construction cost estimate, hydraulic modeling, etc.) for an effort to better connect an approximately 9-acre floodplain surface, construct approximately 2,500 ft of side channel habitats, and add in-stream structure between approximately RM 4.0 and 4.4 on Peshastin Creek. The designs lay the groundwork for a future restoration project to provide off-channel habitats and enhance in-stream habitats primarily to benefit juvenile Chinook and steelhead rearing.

Project Benefit

To develop a preliminary design for a off-channel restoration alternative to provide critical juvenile Chinook and steelhead rearing habitat.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
The project is identified in Upper Columbia Spring Chinook Salmon and Steelhead Recovery Plan (August 2007). Peshastin Creek is identified as a Category 2 Assessment Unit. Recommendations are to re-establish connectivity throughout the assessment unit by removing, replacing, or fixing; artificial barriers; use practical and feasible means to increase stream flows (within the natural hydrologic; regime and existing water rights) in Peshastin Creek; reduce water temperatures by increasing stream flows and restoring riparian vegetation along the stream. Increase habitat diversity and quantity by restoring riparian vegetation, adding instream structures and large woody debris, and reconnecting side channels and the floodplain with the stream (page 207, lines 17-18)
