Description
Nisqually Land Trust used this funding to permanently protect 239 acres on the Nisqually River. The property included Powell Creek and associated floodplain wetland. The confluence of the Nisqually and Powell Creek wetland complex is the most substantial such off-channel habitat complex on the Nisqually. Insuring their permanent protection was a very substantial action.
Following acquisition, restoration actons included removing culverts on Powell Creek drains. Removing them restored connectivity to the single largest off-channel complex in the entire Nisqually River Basin. The restoration project opened up three miles of habitat and provides spawning and rearing habitat for coho, Chinook, steelhead, cutthroat, and possibly chum. The Powell Creek site was selected for early action restoration in the Nisqually River Off-Channel Habitat Assessment.
Project Benefit
The goal of the project is to protect and restore freshwater in-stream channel meander migration patterns. The objective of the project is to protect and restore the flood plain meander functions, sediment transport functions, dissipation, and water storage.
