Middle Deschutes Habitat Acquisition, phase 1

This project was intended to be the first phase of an overall project which sought to conserve, through phased fee title acquisition, 220 acres of undeveloped timberland with 8,000 feet of Deschutes River shoreline, 3,200 feet of Silver Creek shoreline, and 8 acres of wetlands. This grant proposal covered Phase 1, which covered 76 acres and 3,700 feet of Deschutes River shoreline. The project site is located near the confluence of Silver Creek and Deschutes River, south of Offutt Lake. This project, if it were successful, would have protected habitat for chinook, coho, chum, steelhead and cutthroat trout. Unfortunately, the project was terminated after the landowner rejected the appraised value that was arrived at in the appraisal and review appraisal. The phase 2 landowner also indicated they would not sell for at or near the appraised value of the phase 1 property, which was very similarly situated. The order of magnitude between the landowners expectations and the appraisal was such that the gap could not be bridged.
