Description

The Lewis County Conservation District completed a culvert assessment in the upper Chehalis River basin in Lewis County and the Skookumchuck River watershed in Thurston County. The information collected gave us the ability to prioritize barriers to complete habitat assessment surveys for individual culverts. The data details all culverts in the watershed, including county and state roads, private driveways and access roads, and logging roads. The holistic approach was extremely beneficial when determining areas of habitat not currently being used by salmonids, and the number of culverts that needed to be replaced on each individual stream. This grant was used to perform a minimum of 50 priority indexes on blockages. We had a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) in place to prioritize which culverts will be targeted. The TAC was made up of representatives from WDFW, USF&W, DNR, IAC, Lewis County Public Works, a small forest landowners association, Chehalis Confederated Tribe, and Grays Harbor County as the Lead Entity. This grant continued to fill in data gaps in the Limiting Factors Analysis document.

In addition, the top 10 rated barriers had cost estimate designs completed. This gave the Lewis County Conservation District or other entities all the detailed information needed to apply for funding to replace culverts that are currently detrimental impediments to fish passage.

Project Benefit

The goal of the project is to increase/improve information to help select projects that have a high certainty and benefit. The objective of the project is to fill data gaps regarding fish barriers.
