Description

From September 1, 2019 through June 30, 2021 the Puget Sound Partnership acting on behalf of the Leadership Council carried out a plan of work with respect to the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan adopted in November 2006 by NOAA Fisheries as the federal recovery plan for Chinook salmon. RCW 77.85.090(3) designated the Leadership Council as the as the Puget Sound Regional Salmon Recovery Organization for Puget Sound salmon species, except Hood Canal Summer Chum,

The Leadership Council was advised by the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Council (PSSRC). Partnership staff provided support to the Leadership Council and the PSSRC to advance Puget Sound salmon recovery planning, implementation, and adaptive management at the regional and watershed scale.

The Puget Sound Regional Salmon Recovery Organization completed the following:

1.Served as the backbone organization for salmon recovery in Puget Sound,

2.Provided fiscal accountability for the regional recovery organization and report on progress.

3.Ensured the Chinook salmon and steelhead recovery plans are robust, current, and establish priorities for salmon recovery

4.Served as the backbone organization for science and monitoring.

5.Told the story of what needs to be done to achieve salmon recovery

6.Removed barriers to implementation, including by mobilizing funding.

7.Coordinated with salmon recovery partners across the region

8.Participated effectively in statewide salmon recovery efforts.

9.Ran a highly effective Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration (PSAR) program.

Project Benefit

In partnership with the Puget Sound salmon recovery lead entities, the PSP will: 1) Continue to coordinate implementation of the Puget Sound Chinook Recovery Plan (Recovery Plan); 2) Continue to staff the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Council, as the policy body for the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery region; 3) Work to secure technical and science support for the region; and 4) Continue to work with the Hood Canal Coordinating Council, as well as NOAA, the co-managers, the salmon recovery watersheds, and the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Council toward completing elements of a recovery plan for Puget Sound steelhead.
