Description

Mid-Columbia Fisheries, in partnership with the Yakima-Klickitat Fisheries Program of the Yakama Nation, reconnected floodplain habitat and function by placing woody material in alluvial floodplain reaches in SF Cowiche, Taneum and Swauk Creek watersheds. The project was designed to benefit ESA-listed Middle Columbia River steelhead, as well coho, juvenile Chinook salmon, and resident rainbow trout. The overall goal was to re-aggrade streams to reconnect them with broad, formerly-wet meadow systems on public and private lands. This project replicated techniques used in similar stream reaches, which have been shown to profoundly increase stream/floodplain habitat functions, including side channel formation, riparian habitat recovery, pool formation, increased in-channel complexity and spawning gravel retention. Grant funds were used to pay for woody material from private sources, harvest of WDFW-owned timber (available at no cost for restoration on subject properties), transport and strategic placement of logs with and without rootwads and associated slash, selected re-grading of floodplain features to restore stream process, riparian planting, watering, and weeding, installing elk fencing, and Administrative, Architectural and Engineering services.

Project Benefit

The overall goal is to re-aggrade streams to reconnect them with broad, formerly-wet meadow systems on public lands to increase stream/floodplain habitat functions, including side channel formation, riparian habitat recovery, pool formation, increased in-channel complexity and spawning gravel retention.
