Description

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) used this grant to acquire and restore key parts of Trap Creek in the Willapa Bay watershed in Pacific County. Road abandonment work had been completed on the Trap Creek A-Line Road up to the location of the 5-acre rock quarry which was acquired in this project. By acquiring the rock quarry, DNR was able to continue road abandonment work downstream, eliminating 1.4 miles of stream-edge road and returning the area to a functioning riparian environment and helping alleviate the risk of human caused mass-wasting events. In addition, DNR and its partners addressed the loss of LWD and spawning habitat in Trap Creek by placing 78 engineered large woody debris structures along 0.77 miles of stream and increasing nutrients by placing 600 pounds of salmonid carcasses.

The Trap Creek sub-basin was identified in the Willapa Headwaters Watershed Analysis and the Limiting Factors Report as a very important area for salmon habitat. The lower three miles of Trap Creek have been noted as some of the best potential spawning habitat in the Willapa Watershed. Through the aforementioned watershed analysis, the A-line was documented as a major contributor of sediments to Trap Creek due to mass wasting. Partners in this project were the Willapa Bay Fisheries Enhancement Group and the South Bend School District.

Project Benefit

The goal of the project is to protect and improve instream morphology and habitat in salmon bearing streams. The objective of the project is to protect and increase instream cover, spawning, and resting areas.
