Description

Efforts entail monitoring the relative contribution of hatchery and natural-origin sockeye to the Umbrella Creek, Big River, and Lake Ozette adult returns. This project includes: adult monitoring (including visual surveys, and carcass counts); and data analysis to enable the Makah Tribe to estimate the proportions of Hatchery Origin natural Spawners and Natural Origin sockeye retained for broodstock.

Project Benefit

Umbrella Creek sockeye escapement monitoring is crucial to the Lake Ozette sockeye recovery program. This project will enable the Makah to monitor: the relative contribution of hatchery-origin and natural-origin sockeye (HOR and NOR); the proportions of hatchery origin/natural spawners (pHOS) and natural origin sockeye retained for broodstock (pNOB); the proportionate natural influence (PNI) of the Umbrella Creek spawners; and Hatchery Origin Recruits straying to the Lake Ozette spawning beaches.
