Description

The project goal was accomplished by the development of 100% engineered plans to replace two culverts, known fish passage barriers, on Little Case Creek, improving passage for coho, Chinook and steelhead and opening access to spawning and rearing habitat upstream of the barriers. There is a proposal based on these plans for the two culverts to be replaced with crossings that allow for fish passage of all life stages at many flows.

Project Benefit

The South Fork Eel River is historically the largest producer of coho salmon in the Eel River basin and is expected to play a key role in repopulating the watershed according to the Final Recovery Plan for the Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast Evolutionarily Significant Unit of Coho Salmon (National Marine Fisheries Service, 2014). Therefore, maximizing habitat available to coho salmon within the South Fork Eel Watershed is of utmost importance.

Description and scope of the plan implemented
This design project will evaluate two culverted crossings on Little Case Creek, a coho bearing stream. Based on evaluations, 100% design plans will be developed that remediate the coho barriers caused by these stream crossings. Once design plans are implemented, SONCC task SFER-5.1.25.2 will be addressed through the removal of the barriers. Both will be replaced with with stream crossings that will pass all salmonid life stages under all flows.
