Description    


Coastal cutthroat trout have declined significantly throughout their range, and are in danger of extinction because they consist of small, isolated populations (Young et al, 2005). To date, research on cutthroat has focused on mainland headwaters to the exclusion of short steep coastal watersheds typical of the San Juan Islands, where some researchers predicted that cutthroat would be found (Rosenfeld et al 2002). Over the past six years, we have demonstrated that cutthroat populations persist in WRIA2, although they are threatened by a combination of climate change and land use practices affecting stream flows. During this project we: (1) completed preliminary surveying of potential cutthroat habitats in San Juan County; (2) determined the min. pool depths and max. pool temperatures that WRIA2 cutthroat currently tolerate; (3) identified stream-specific threats to preserving stream flows and temperatures within the range that is consistent with cutthroat survival; and (4) made recommendations to landowners and county government for in-stream flow rules, habitat restoration and protection priorities, and actions needed to perpetuate native cutthroat stocks in WRIA2.

The integrity of our freshwater resources has direct implications for the health of our nearshore habitats. Chinook, other salmonids, and the forage fish on which they feed are inexorably linked to the nearshore, and thus to the watersheds. This study combines activities 27, 42, 56, and 57 in the WRIA2 salmon recovery plan matrix.

Project Benefit    


The goal of the project is to increase and/or maintain adequate flows for wild salmon. The objective of the project is to reduce over appropriation of water in salmon bearing streams.
