Description

Columbia Land Trust used this funding to help protect the most significant Lower Columbia River chum production site between the Grays River near the mouth of the Columbia River (RM 20) and Hardy/Hamilton Creeks just below Bonneville Dam. Federal, state, and regional reports have described the importance of good chum spawning habitat in the Lower Columbia. This 7.76 acre site, located near Vancouver Washington, includes approximately 600 feet of shoreline. The properties are mostly forested with relatively intact riparian and shoreline habitat. The conservation area was threatened at the time of acquisition by development: zoning, which allowed 1 unit per 10,000 square feet (0.23 acres). Without the conservation acquisition, the threat of residential development of the site in the near future was very high.
Partners in the project were Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), City of Vancouver, and the Wood family members who own the property. All partners share salmon conservation goals. Columbia Land Trust manages the fee land and conservation easements.

Project Benefit

The goal of the project is to protect intact habitat from degradation. The objective of the project is to protect salmon refugia and habitat that is part of a key ecological process.
