Description

The Stillaguamish Tribe proposes to expand and enhance riparian forests on Tribal-owned properties known as the Trafton, zis a ba, and Segelsen properties. We propose restoration of Riparian Habitat, Habitat Restoration Site Maintenance, and Nursery Operations for native vegetation production for planting at properties identified in this proposal. Nursery operations shall occur at an existing Tribal nursery. Metrics include the following:

• Trafton – 11-acre work area. Habitat Restoration Site Maintenance to promote native plant establishment at previously planted area; weed control primarily targeting knotweed, blackberry, and Scotch broom. Supplemental planting of estimated 500 plants (0.16 RM). Note last year (FY 2019) 6 acres were proposed, 5 additional acres are associated with FY 2020, 11 acres total for the worksite.

• Zis a ba – 10-acre work area. Habitat Restoration Site Maintenance to promote native plant establishment at previously planted area; weed control primarily targeting blackberry, poison hemlock, and thistle. Supplemental planting of estimated 250 plants (0.38 RM). Note last year (FY 2019) 9 acres were proposed, 1 additional acre is associated with FY 2020, 10 acres total for the worksite.

• Segelsen – 5 acre work area. Pre- and post-planting weed control; riparian planting to establish mixed-forest buffer along North Fork Stillaguamish River (estimated 2,500 native plants; 0.14 RM). Note this constitutes a new worksite with the addition of FY 2020 funds.

Howell worksite (5-acres) added in CY 2022.

Project Benefit

The purpose of the project is to improve poor riparian habitat conditions described in the Stillaguamish Watershed Chinook Salmon Recovery Plan (2005) as one of the six factors limiting Chinook salmon productivity in the Stillaguamish Watershed. Work tasks include non-native, invasive, and noxious weed control; riparian planting; and production of native plants in quantities suitable for the identified work areas and culturally significant for Stillaguamish Tribe. The outcome of the project will include habitat benefits such as increased shade, floodplain roughness, and future large wood for recruitment to the channel to benefit Chinook and other salmon.

The goal of the project is to expand and enhance riparian forests along Chinook bearing waters of the Stillaguamish River. This will be accomplished by controlling non-native, invasive, and noxious weeds, and planting and maintaining native conifers, deciduous trees, and shrubs. The purpose of the project is to improve habitat benefits such as increased shade, floodplain roughness, and future large wood for recruitment to the channel to benefit Chinook and other salmon.
