Description

This project replaced a failing 48-in CMP culvert with a 15-ft wide aluminum arch culvert with an anticipated service life of greater than 50 years. Installation included substrate in the culvert that mimics the natural stream bed, accommodates 100-peak flow, and restores fish passage and natural channel function.

Project Benefit

The primary benefit of this project is improved habitat connectivity for coho and pink salmon. The new Peterson Street crossing will open 0.12 km of stream habitat up to the Wachusetts Street crossing, which is slated for replacement next. Ultimately, when both Peterson and Wachusetts Street crossings are replaced, a total of 1.2 km of stream habitat will be reconnected, but the lower Peterson Street culvert is the necessary first step.
