Description

This project supported the operation of a rotary screw smolt trap during the sockeye smolt out-migration from April to July during the 2022 and 2023 calendar years to detect calcein marks. Trap efficiency (TE) trials were conducted throughout the smolt out-migration period using 100 smolts with alternating caudal or ventral fin clips per trial. Fork length measurements and calcein mark status were recorded for all TE smolts prior to mark application. TE trial smolts were acclimated in a net pen and transported 2 miles upstream, where they were released into Lake Ozette near the Rayonier landing to facilitate a more natural out-migration pattern so their susceptibility to recapture remained similar to natural migrants. The results from the trap efficiency trials were used to expand trap counts to estimate total smolt abundance.

Project Benefit

Calcein marking and monitoring project will allow the Makah Tribe to non-lethally determine HOR and NOR contributions to the outmigration.
