Description    


This project supported the recovery of otoliths, CWTs, scales, and fin tissues for DNA analysis during carcass surveys, and during harvest monitoring and processed these samples at the Tulalip Stock Assessment Laboratory. An analysis was conducted to estimate hatchery- and natural-origin contribution rates to Snohomish escapements and hatcheries; and straying and harvest contribution rates, and assess Hatchery-vs-Wild ecological and genetic interactions (juvenile and adult).

Project Benefit    


Monitoring hatchery/wild fish enabled by this project is the backbone of the hatchery monitoring program and is mandatory. Recovery of the entire suite of indicators, including thermally-marked otoliths, CWTs and adipose fin clip data, is “non-discretionary” and required to estimate straying and contribution rates, demographic-and genetic-based estimates of pHOS, pHOB, and PNI, survival, H vs W escapement, genetic mark-recapture estimates, gene flow, relative productivity. These estimates enable us to ID hatchery fish from the thousands of other fish in the extensive escapement in a very large river system, plus thousands more in regional fisheries and hatcheries.
